Diet can benefit or harm your eyes, but before we discuss that, let’s talk about a few simple, lifestyle choices you can incorporate into your day now that can improve your eye health.
- Stop smoking: There are zero health benefits to smoking, and it increases free radical production in the body which can lead to decreased eyesight overtime.
- Take care of your cardiovascular system: High blood pressure can lead to damaged miniscule blood vessels on the retina, which can stop the blood from freely flowing. In your to keep your blood pressure perfectly balances, don’t consume fructose. Research has shown it only increases your risk of high blood pressure levels.
- Balance the blood sugar: Too much sugar in your blood means pulling fluid from your eyes, making it harder for you to focus. It can also damage blood vessels in the retina and prevent the blood from flowing.
- Eat plenty of fresh dark green leafy vegetable: Leafy greens promote good vision. Research shows that those who consume high levels of veggies rich in carotenoid, like zeaxanthin and lutein, had better eyesight.
- Eat your omega-3 fats: A study published in the August 2001 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology discovered eating omega-3 fatty acids meant having healthier vision in the long run. The downside of going to the store and buying some fresh salmon is that pollution and fish farming means fish aren’t the best source for omega 3 fats, unless you caught the fish yourself and know it’s safe. So try krill oil. Krill oil has astaxanthin., and antioxidant that can benefit your eyes in many ways.
- Ditch trans fats: Diet full of trans fat have been shown to contribute to macular degeneration. This is because it messes with the omega-3 fats in your body, which as you just read, are good for healthy eyesight. This means avoiding most processed, junks foods like margarine, shortening, and fried foods, like doughnuts and french-fries, cookies, crackers, and pastries. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a treat every once in a while, but if you want to keep your eyes healthy, avoid trans fats as if your eyesight depends on it. Because it does.
- Avoid aspartame: There’s nothing good about consuming aspartame really, but one of the worst symptoms of aspartame poisoning is problems with your vision. Knocking it out of your diet permanently can help you in the long run.

Antioxidants fight dangerous free radicals in the body, and that includes your eyes. Many antioxidants have been show to benefit your eyes significantly, like:

Your macula in the eyes contains a high amount of lutein; the macula is the central part of your retina that causes straight-ahead and detailed vision. Lutein is found specifically in the macular pigment, and can defend your central vision.

- Age-related macular degeneration(ARMD)
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Cystoid macular edema
- Retinal arterial occlusion
- Venous occlusion
- Inflammatory eye diseases (i.e., scleritis, retinitis, keratitis, and iritis,)
