Passionate smokers usually live with this type of cough and refuse to accept the possibility that this is probably a symptom of much more serious disease than the common cold. The only thing you can do to help yourself is to immediately stop smoking. Forever.
Doctors warn smokers that the cough mustn’t be ignored, since it is an indicator of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that affects more than one million people in the UK.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an umbrella term for a range of diseases of that vital organ, among which include chronic bronchitis. Obviously, the disease is manifested by a series of symptoms, one of which is the shortness of breath and difficulty in movement during the minor physical activities such as climbing stairs.
In England, 25,000 people died from the disease, of which 90 percent because of the consequences of smoking. In 2014 and 2015, the ambulance intervened in 130,000 cases related to smoking.
Therefore, the British decided to go in the campaign, of which aim to deter the people from smoking tobacco. Olympian Iwan Thomas made a promotional short film, whose mother was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, caused by smoking.
“I’ve never taken this disease seriously, but when trivial things, such as preparing tea, climbing stairs or going to the bus station become insurmountable obstacles, you realize how serious it is” – said Thomas.
Doctor Nicholas Hopkinson, a representative of the clinic for lung diseases in the hospital Royal Brompton warns: “Smoker’s cough is a final warning to stop the damage your lungs are taking.”
How to help yourself? Easy. Stop smoking today, because tomorrow it can be too late.
