In Russia, Maria Chelysheva an 8-year-old girl became an orphan in 2014. Her whole family died as a result of a batch of old rotten potatoes in their cellar. Her father never came back when he went into the cellar to get some potatoes. Her mother also never returned either when she went into the basement to look for her husband.
The same faith happened to Maria’s grandmother and then her brother when they went down the basement. a neighbour was called upon for help by her grandmother but by the time help arrived, the woman had suffered the same faith as the rest. Only Maria.
Potatoes contain glycoalkaloids which is a chemical compound also found in poisonous nightshade plants. Under the right circumstances, potatoes become naturally toxic even from simply inhaling in their poisonous chemicals and also when they are consumed by humans.
The more Potatoes’ rot, their glycoalkaloids concentration drastically increase which causes them to let out a poisonous and dangerous gas harmful to man. Maria’s family was killed by this deadly compound.
Luckily, Maria did not suffer the same fate as her entire family when she went looking for her family. The poisonous gas dissipated a little because her mother had left the door open.
It is absolutely heartbreaking what happened to Maria and her family. But their story serves as a warning to everyone about the dangers of rotten potatoes. Get rid of potatoes at home thatt risk of going bad before it becomes too late.
