If you live somewhere within the geographic lowlands, regardless of whether you are in the town or in the countryside, in relation to those who live in highlands – you have a much higher risk of getting lung cancer. Specific bacteria at certain altitudes may also contribute to specific cancers if they proliferate. Cell metastatic potential is also dependent on altitude.
In addition to smoking, as well as air pollution and smog, one of the reasons why people in certain areas often suffer from lung cancer is the air they breathe!
In fact it does matter where you live above sea level. In the lowlands the air is denser, and therefore richer in oxygen, which in spite of its beneficial effects, can be harmful to our bodies in excessive amounts.
Simply, oxygen is a very unusual element. Every time we eat, our body uses it to turn food into energy. However, oxidation is a metabolic process which releases a multitude of so-called free radicals, which can also be highly carcinogenic.
These highly reactive atoms are able to make a real hubble-bubble in our body and even lead to DNA damage and eventually cause cells to mutate – and, that’s cancer. Given that the right lung, as a part of the respiratory system, is the first to be affected by oxygen, it is the most susceptible to the disease of cancer.
While this sounds really scary, it is a natural process. However, if you want to reduce the risk of getting lung cancer, move to a higher altitude above sea level; it would be best to move to the mountains, that’s where the air is thin, where your lungs not only work differently, but they also have less harmful elements to counter.
