According to Northern Ireland’s top pathologist, prescription painkiller tramadol which is been taken by a lot of people on a daily kills than any other drugs, including cocaine and heroin.
If taken correctly, the painkiller is not dangerous to the health, but the risk is high when people mix it with alcohol or drugs related substance.
Last year, tramadol was responsible for the death of 33 people. Among these people, there was a pensioner in his 70’s and a 16 years old girl.
People are not aware of the potential risk taking tramadol. People assume its safe because it is a prescription drug.
Tramadol is used to treat severe or moderate pains and it should be available only when it is prescribed for a patient. In 2004, it was reclassified and was made an illegal Class C drug if it is not prescribed by a doctor.
Campaigners on anti-drug are saying many people are turning to the black market to get these drugs.
Urgent action should be taken on the people going about this drug and urgent measures should also be put in place to crackdown the illegal market, if not there will be more high records of death. Tramadol should be upgraded this time around to Class A.
