Healthy lovers drink up! You’ve known something that others are just discovering: one of the healthiest drinks in the world is coffee.

And that’s due to the hundreds of compounds that are in it. Some of these compounds have worthwhile health benefits. There have been a plethora of studies that show people who drink the most coffee tend to live a lot longer and have a decreased chance of suffering from diabetes or being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.


Coffee Is Key Antioxidant Source

Remember, coffee is made thanks to the hot water that goes through the coffee grounds in the brewing process. The coffee beans have substances that become mixed with the water and are in the drink.  You already know about one substance: caffeine. However, there are loads more and science has yet to identify every one of them.

Many compounds are antioxidants, which can protect the body from the oxidation process – free radicals that destroy the molecules. Oxidation is thought to be a player in the aging process along with illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.

Coffee is actually regarded as the key source of antioxidants in Western diet. This means it fares much better than both fruits and vegetables, even when combined.

Studies: Coffee Drinkers Have Longer Lifespans

According to various studies, coffee drinkers tend to live longer. A large groundbreaking study was published in the 2012 New England Journal of Medicine, which showed favorable outcomes for coffee drinkers.’ It followed more than 400,000 people between 50 and 71 years old. They were asked about their consumption of coffee. The study followed them for a period of 12 to 13 years, and it showed that coffee drinkers tended to still be alive.

It appears that four to five cups a day is the ideal goal. Men tended to have a 12 percent less risk and women had about a 16 percent decreased risk. Anything more than this and there were no extra benefits.  But, the study did reveal that even one cup of coffee each day could less to a five to six percent reduced chance for death. Thus, even a minute amount could have a positive effect.

Yes, the numbers appear rather small but consider how many people drink coffee, it could be benefits to millions of folks.

When researchers looked at the death causes, what they found was this: coffee drinkers were not as likely to die from the following:

  • Accidents and injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Infections
  • Respiratory disease
  • Stroke

And, the benefits don’t revolve around caffeine, as both regular coffee and decaf produced the same effects.

While the study is just an observational one and can’t be proved to be the reason for the reduction, it can be relatively safe to say that coffee isn’t a scoundrel after all.


What Other Studies Have Revealed

Coffee’s effects on health have been thoroughly been studied time and time again. Two other studies showed coffee drinkers weren’t as likely to die early. They also had a reduced chance for liver diseases, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and so many more.

A Harvard study showed coffee could lead to mood improvement, slashing depression by nearly 20 percent with suicide reduction by 53 percent.

Coffee appears to add years to a person’s life while also giving them life to those years.

Although coffee has been deemed unhealthy due to the caffeine, studies show that coffee is one extremely healthy beverage. So, drink up!
