The chilly months are almost upon us. Come November, you will need to bring out those winter clothes to keep yourself warm. But have you considered changing your diet to cope with the changing weather? Superfoods are those foods with high nutritional values that you can only benefit from if you eat the food in its entirety. To counter the different infections, cold and to boost immunity, winter specific superfoods which are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C should be consumed. Here we have highlighted 4 of those superfoods that you need to include in your diet to get through the chilly months.

  1. Carrots: If you want to stay away from respiratory illness and keep your lungs healthy during the winter months, include carrots in your diet. Carrots are a natural source of beta carotene which goes into the body as vitamin A. Vitamin A is staple to most of our immune functions and helps in preventing a runny nose. Try to add some oil or butter while preparing carrots as the body requires a little bit of fat to digest beta carotene.
  2. Red Apples: Red Apples scores the highest in antioxidants levels and also have an array of health benefits. They are also rich in pectin, a form of soluble fiber known to help lower cholesterol.
  3. Broccoli: If the bright colour of broccoli did not give you a hint, take our word for it. Broccoli is one of the many winter superfoods that are most overlooked. It is rich with antioxidants (notably indole-3-carbinol and sulforaphane), and contains high levels of key vitamins and minerals. Broccoli is also a good source of naturally occurring folic acid. Whether you stir fry it or steam it with oyster sauce, try to include this superfood in your diet.
  4. Dark chocolate: Though a processed food, dark chocolates are filled with antioxidants, iron, magnesium and zinc. Pure cocoa serves about 9.6 grams of zinc per 100 gm. If you cannot find pure cocoa, eat dark chocolate that is about 80% unsweetened cocoa. Zinc is a trace mineral which is needed for the proper functioning of our immune systems.

If you cannot include these superfoods in your diet, throw an assortment of vegetables in a bowl and make yourself a warm vegetable soup. A steaming pot of vegetable soup with a little chilli and garlic will really boost your immunity.
